Great Road Trips Near Calgary
The weather is warming and we’re ready to shake the winter blues. If you’re looking for something to do, say a little road trip, check out these quick trips away from Calgary. Here’s a list of some of our favorite road trips near Calgary.
Adventure and Nature Seekers
Banff National Park – 1 hour from Calgary
There’s plenty to do throughout Banff. The all popular Lake Louise is a traveller’s favorite, but we recommend going over to Moraine Lake. It’s not as busy but has the same breathtaking views. We love on a calm day seeing the mountains reflected in the water. Bring your hiking gear and challenge yourself with a climb to the summit of Tunnel Mountain Trail. If you want an easier path to hike we suggest the Bow Glacier Falls Trail. It brings you along the lake and offers stunning views of the falls. Plan for a few hours on this path.
Waterton National Park – 2 1/2 hours from Calgary
We had a hard time choosing just one Alberta natural beauty. Waterton National Park is known as the Crown of the Continent. It was formed by glaciers many years ago and connects with the Rocky Mountains. The whole park provides spectacular views from summit to lakeside. The trails offer hikes for leisure strolls to multi-day hikes spanning several kilometers.
Museum and Arts
Art Gallery of Alberta – 3 hours from Calgary
Besides the unique and flowing architecture of the Art Gallery of Alberta’s (AGA) museum, there is so much to see. Exhibits rotate seasonally and are dedicated to the preservation of Alberta and Canadian art. The AGA offers something for everyone, from classes to art education. Don’t miss the views from the coffee shop on the top floor!
We would also like to highlight the Royal Alberta Museum in Edmonton. The previous location was closed at the end of 2015 and we are looking forward to their new location opening in early 2018.
Family Friendly Stops
Dinosaur Provincial Park – 2 1/2 hours from Calgary
A great family friendly destination for all ages. Dinosaur Provincial Park offers a visitors centre and museum for kids to learn about dinosaurs. You can stay overnight near the park and the kids can play and climb on formations where dinosaurs once roamed. It’s said to be one of the richest deposits of dinosaur bones in North America. We suggest booking the tour bus within the park a few weeks out, it will sell out!
Shopping
CrossIron Mills – 20 minutes from Calgary
A quick trip north, CrossIron Mills offers a large selection of outlet shopping. Take the whole day to peruse over 200 shoppes. There’s plenty of places to eat throughout the mall, so also come hungry.
