The holiday season can be one of the most joyous times of the year for Calgarians and their families. It can also be a challenging one. That’s why this year, we have partnered with the Calgary Flames to support the Closer to Home’s, Adopt-a-Family initiative. To kick this off we are hosting a “drop-off a gift day” at Lexus of Calgary with special guest Harvey the Hound. We will also have a raffle for amazing Calgary Flames items.
2 x pairs of Calgary Flames tickets
2 x signed Calgary Flames jerseys
2 x Calgary Flames hats
You have a chance to win 1 of 6 of these items. To be entered, drop-off your donations on December 4, 2PM-3:30PM.
We invite you to join us on December 4th to help us make this a December to Remember. Come and enjoy holiday treats, eggnog, coffee, pastries and more.
Need some ideas on how you can make a change? Here are some great ways that you can help the Closer to Home’s Adopt-a-Family initiative.
These items will help support the families and programs served by Closer to Home Community Services. Gift cards give Closer to Home the greatest flexibility to address the most urgent needs.
During the holiday season, and year round, Closer to Home serves low-income families. Your gift card to a Calgary-based grocery store will ensure families have food security this winter season. Many of our families shop at Superstore and Walmart, but some live closer to Safeway, Save on Foods and Calgary Co-op. Gift cards in any amount to any of these stores will make a difference.
Many of our families do not have the extra income to purchase or replace every day household items. This includes everything from bed sheets, pillows and blankets to kitchen utensils. Gift cards to stores like HomeSense, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Canadian Tire, The Bay, Walmart, Home Depot and even Superstore, will make a difference.
On a restricted budget, opportunities for adventure, health and learning are sometimes the first to be cut, which can severely affect the well-being of a child and her parent. Your gift of recreation, wellness, and new discoveries will be welcomed with open arms. Some ideas include gift cards to City of Calgary Recreation (pool admissions, swimming lessons), to local attractions (Telus Spark, National Music Centre, Calgary Zoo) and more.
Give a family a boost this year, by donating a gift card to purchase fuel for their vehicle or bus tickets for public transit.
Can’t decide? Cash donations are tax receiptable and will be used to fund the greatest need, including the options above as well as programs like ‘Buying Time’ where Closer to Home provides one time payments on electrical or gas bills in crisis situations. We also provide one-on-one guidance, support and planning to help lift a family out of such a crisis.
