Art is in the Details: Production of the 2016 Lexus ES 350Apr 19th, 2016
October 19, 2015 marks the first time a Lexus was built in the USA, and the second time a Lexus vehicle was manufactured outside of Japan. The new Lexus ES 350 began production in Kentucky and is preparing to produce 50,000 Lexus ES 350 units this year.
To prepare for the new production, there were 750 employees dedicated to every step of the process before the first Lexus ES 350 came off the manufacturing line.
“Over a million and a half training hours went into the preparation of the Lexus before we even built the first one,”
said Mike Bridge, Lexus Assembly Manager.
In fact, 30% of the Lexus ES 350 model is made up of parts built in Canada and the USA, including the engine, seats, and most of the steel exterior panels and unibody.
A new Lexus ES 350 rolls off the assembly line every three to five minutes. Watch this behind-the-scenes video for a closer look at the production process.
The assembly lines are peaceful and clean, lit with LED lights in a wide open space free of clutter. Every worker on the Lexus ES line memorizes approximately 80 steps that are completed in 305 seconds to keep things moving.
The art is in the details at Lexus. For example, one team leader is solely responsible for the stitch across the top of the instrument panel on the dashboard. He’s a certified dashboard sewer and completed a four week training program involving seven steps and thousands of perfect stitches. Before his training, he had first learn how to fold an origami cat face in under 90 seconds using his non-dominant hand.
